In Lesson 6, we learned about self-introductions. Now, let’s explore how to ask about someone’s information (such as their name or occupation) in a conversation. In this lesson, we will study about possessive form.
Possessive Form
Possessive forms like “my ~”, “his ~”, “this ~”, “that ~” modify the noun that follows them. Unlike possessive forms in English (mine, ours, etc.), Vietnamese possessive form does not change based on singular or plural or gender, etc.
Form:
noun + của + pronoun
Examples:
- cuốn sách của tôi (my book)
👉 Đây là cuốn sách của tôi.
This is my book. - nhà của anh ấy (his house)
👉 Đó là nhà của anh ấy.
That is his house. - chồng của chị ấy (her husband)
👉 Anh Minh không phải là chồng của chị Mai.
Mr. Minh is not Ms. Mai’s husband.
Asking About Someone
When using possessive form to ask about someone’s information, you can use the following question structures. The question word changes based on what you are asking.
Structures:
noun + của + pronoun + là gì/khi nào/ở đâu/như thế nào?
Examples:
- Tên của anh là gì?
What is your name? - Quê của chị ở đâu?
Where is your hometown? - Sinh nhật của bạn là khi nào?
When is your birthday? - Sức khỏe của anh ấy như thế nào?
How is his health? - Cái túi này của ai?
