Grammar14 : Interrogative Sentences with “đã ~ chưa?”

In this lesson, we will learn about the Vietnamese interrogative sentence pattern “đã ~ chưa?”.

In the previous lesson, we introduced the “đã từng ~ chưa?” structure to ask about experiences. In this lesson, we will study “đã ~ chưa?”, which is used to ask about completed or uncompleted actions.

“đã ~ chưa?” (Have you already ~?)

Sentence structure:

Subjects (Nouns or Personal pronouns) +  đã từng  +  Predicates (Verbs or Adjectives)  +  Object or complement + chưa?
 

Example Sentences:

① Anh đã ăn tối chưa?
    Have you had dinner yet?

② Em đã no chưa?
    Are you full yet?

③ Chị đã đến nơi chưa?
    Have you arrived yet?

Answers to “đã ~ chưa?” Questions

Example Conversations:

① A: Em đã ăn sáng chưa?
  Have you had breakfast yet?

  B: Vâng, em ăn sáng rồi.
  Yes, I have already had breakfast.

② A: Anh đã có người yêu chưa?
        Do you have a girlfriend/boyfriend yet?

    B: Anh vẫn chưa có người yêu.
        I still don’t have a girlfriend/boyfriend yet.

③ A: Anh đã ăn gì chưa?
        Have you eaten anything yet?

   B: Tôi vẫn chưa ăn gì.
       I haven’t eaten anything yet.

  • ăn tốito have dinner
  • ăn sángto have breakfast
  • no : full (after eating)
  • người yêu : lover / boyfriend / girlfriend
